Banda Aceh is the province’s capital, a sprawling
city blend of the old and the new. The 19th century
Mesjid Raya mosque towers over the skyline, and the call
to prayer echoes five times daily over the city,
reminding its inhabitants of its millennium-long history
of Islamic faith. But glimpses of local traditions are
still to be had at the Pasar Aceh, a traditional night
market overflowing with exotic local produce and
exquisite local crafts, including renowned Acehnese
embroidery.
Colorful cultural spectacles, including
local dance performances, are presented at the Cultural
Center, while tourists can find an informative overview
of the area’s cultural heritage, including a replica
of a traditional Acehnese house, at the Aceh Museum. For
a glimpse of the splendor of Aceh’s traditional
sultanate, visit the Gunongan, a 17th century water
palace built to honor a sultan’s wife.
