| Gunung Leuser National Park Area
Gunung Leuser National Park is widely renowned as one
of the most spectacular wildlife reserves in the world.
Its 800,000 hectares of virgin rainforest are home to a
stunning variety of rare species, including elephants, rhinoceros, tigers and orangutans.
Visitors interested in
environmental conservation can visit the wildlife
research centers in the park, including the world famous
Orangutan Rehabilitation Center. Permits to enter the
park as well as guides for trekking and camping
adventures can be found at the park office in Tanah
Merah. For the ultimate adventure, one can raft down the
Alus River, crossing exciting white water rapids through
a jungle filled with exotic life. Accommodations near
the park are basic.
