The province’s capital, the city of Bengkulu, is a
tranquil town of only 50,000 inhabitants, located on
Sumatra’s west coast. The major attraction is the slow,
relaxed pace of life, which has changed little over the
years. Travelers can, however, visit the Provincial Museum
for an introduction to the region’s culture and art. Of
special interest to history buffs is the house of
Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, where he lived in
exile from 1938-41, which has now been preserved as a
museum. Bengkulu offers basic facilities for travelers,
including banking services, postal and telephone services,
and a three star hotel with swimming pool and beachfront
rooms. Bengkulu’s restaurants offer a range of
Indonesian specialties, from spicy Sumatran to Chinese to
traditional pastries.
From Bengkulu, adventure-seeking
travelers can arrange transport to Enggano Island, one of
the most remote destinations in all of Indonesia, where
the local people still practice an ancient way of life
untouched by time.
