West Java is the historic home of the Sundanese people,
renowned for their vibrant dance, music and art, their friendly
ways, and their deep religious faith. The province is a land of
contrasts, from its modern cityscapes to the tranquil shores of
its southern and western beaches. Most of its land is given over
to agriculture, and shimmering wet rice fields and coffee and
tea plantations cover its hills.
West Java is home to several
active volcanoes - including the famous Krakatau off its western
coast - and the Ujung Kulon National Park, which hosts a number
of rare species, including panthers, monkeys, wild cattle and
the Javan rhino. Bandung is the province’s capital, and the
third largest city in Indonesia. It is an easy blend of old and
new, offering travelers world class comforts and a glimpse of a
fascinating ancient culture. Cirebon is another important city
in the province, an ancient port town famous for its blend of
ethnic groups and its stunning traditional batik dyed cloth.
