Bogor, a pleasant green city set in the hills 60
kilometers south of Jakarta, has, in recent years,
become a virtual suburb of Jakarta. It has, however,
lost little of its fabled charms. Its botanical gardens
still number among the best in the world, with some
15,000 species of tropical plants on display. And while
Dutch colonialism is long over, the town still has a
distinct European flair, harkening back to the days when
it was a favorite retreat of the colonial officials from
the heat and commotion of Jakarta.
Bogor’s
accommodations include a choice of comfortable hotels,
with air conditioning, pools, and gardens. The city’s
restaurants offer a range of delightful dishes, from
Western food to spicy Sundanese cuisine, the choice of
Bogor’s predominantly West Javanese population. Around
Bogor are a number of pleasant drives through rolling
hills, tea plantations, traditional villages and
stretches of untouched forest.
