Central Java is the island’s mystical heartland, the
source of its complex culture and the site of its powerful
royal courts. It was here that the classical Javanese arts
evolved, and that the most elaborate forms of language,
etiquette and philosophy are still practiced. It is here
that visitors can witness a fantastic range of traditional
performances, from the flowing movements of Javanese dance
to the otherworldly tones of the gamelan orchestra
to the mystical stories of the shadow play.
The city of
Surakarta, known as Solo, is a center for the arts, a
quiet town where life still revolves around the palace of
the sultan. This is where students from all over the world
come to study the arts or to explore Javanese
philosophical and mystical traditions.
Semarang, the
province’s capital, is a busy port city on the north
coast that has not lost its old world charm. Jepara, also
on the north coast, is renowned as a center of wood
working in Indonesia.
