Java | Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park Area
Mount Bromo is
an active volcano, 2,392 meters high, topped by a massive
moonscape crater 10 kilometers across. It is, without a
doubt, one of the most spectacular sights in all of
Indonesia, especially when sunrise casts its colors over the
barren landscape. The mountain area is home to the Tengger
people, who in the midst of modern Islamic Java still
preserve their ancient traditions, a mix of Hindu and
animist beliefs. The Tengger revere the mountain as a holy
site, and make regular offerings to it, as well as at the
Hindu temple that sits at its base. The whole region is
enclosed within the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park,
which also encompasses Mount Semeru, Java’s highest peak
at a lofty 3,676 meters.
There are a
number of accommodations in the area, ranging from simple
mountainside shelters to luxurious resort style hotels
offering impressive services and facilities. But no matter
where you base yourself, it is certain that a trip through
the region, with its fascinating nature and culture, will be
a highlight of any visit to Indonesia.
