Malang is one of Indonesia’s most pleasant and
inviting cities, a tranquil town set in the lush, cool
hills of East Java’s mountainous interior. A favorite
weekend escape since colonial times, Malang still
preserves its genteel, old world feel to welcome the
modern visitor. Malang’s streets invite browsing, past
the traditional markets, including a flower market
overflowing with tropical blossoms, past the town square
with its fascinating colonial architecture, all the way
to the 9th century Hindu temple on the outskirts of
town. A must for any Malang visitor is a stop at the
Toko Oen, a colonial-era café which has changed little
over the past century.
Malang boasts some of Java’s
most unique and beautiful accommodations, including the
antique filled Tugu Park Hotel, as well as modern hotels
with international standard facilities and guest rooms.
Malang’s cultural center offers a wide range of
performances, including the famous Javanese horse trance
dance.
