With a population of about 100,000, the provincial
capital of Palangkaraya is a bustling yet laid back town
with clean, pleasant streets and friendly inhabitants.
The town’s art center is an excellent place to see
authentic Dayak performances, as well as some fine
examples of traditional architecture, while the
Provincial Museum possesses an interesting and
informative exhibit of local arts and crafts.
Palangkaraya’s traditional market is a great place to
shop for souvenirs, or to just admire the colorful
wares. The city is also the best place from which to
plan trips into Central Kalimantan’s isolated
heartland.
Accommodations in Palangkaraya are simple but
decent, mainly offering air conditioning, restaurants,
and entertainment programs. Fish fills the menus of
Central Kalimantan, as does traditional barbecue - a
treat not to be missed. 35 kilometers north of
Palangkaraya is the Tangkiling National Park, with a
recreation area, lake, and nature reserve.
