Hotels by Location | Central Kalimantan | Pangkalanbun Area

Pangkalanbun, a few kilometers upriver from Kalimantan’s southern coastline, is visited by travelers searching for a base from which to launch a trek through the nearby Tanjung Puting National Park. The town itself is a quiet backwater, offering banking services, telecommunications, and shopping for basic provisions. Accommodations here are simple but sufficient, and restaurants serve decent local fare. The park itself is truly impressive, offering visitors an unforgettable experience of unspoiled nature. Its 300,000 hectares are home to a stunning range of rare species, but without a doubt, the stars of the park are the orangutans.

There are two rehabilitation and research centers set up for the primates, Camp Leakey and Tanjung Harapan. Visitors are welcome at both places, and can watch the staff help reintroduce orphaned or captured orangutans back into the wild. The dedication of the staff and the stunning beauty of the site and the animals are certain to touch the hearts of anyone who visits.

Basic accommodations are available within the park, which also boasts some beautiful beaches where one can swim and watch the sun set over the deep blue of the Java Sea.
