Lampung, Sumatra’s
southernmost province, is a fascinating blend of diverse
natural and cultural attractions. It is a complex, colorful
melting pot of different ethnic groups, including the local
people descended from the 11th century Sriwijayan
Empire, plus hundreds of thousands of transmigrants from
overcrowded Java and Bali, who brought with them the
traditional shadow puppet play and Balinese-style Hindu
temples.
Lampung’s
environment also offers visitors a rich range of activities.
The province’s fertile soil supports a thriving
agricultural industry, and visitors can witness clove,
coffee, pepper and coconut plantations scattered throughout
the region. Travelers can trek through the Way Kumbas
National Park, a 1,300 square kilometer expanse of lowland
forest, and even ride the elephants in the park’s Elephant
Center. Lampung is also the place from which many visitors
choose to travel by boat to visit Krakatau, Indonesia’s
most famous volcano, whose 1883 eruption caused legendary
destruction, set in the sea between Sumatra and Java.
