Nusa Tenggara | Flores Area
Flores
is one of Indonesia’s most beautiful islands, its shores
ringed by white sand beaches and clear blue waters and its
highlands marked by forest covered volcanic slopes and mountain
lakes, including the famous three colored lakes of Mount
Kelimutu.
Flores
is also renowned as one of the best spots for water sports
in Indonesia, offering visitors excellent swimming, snorkeling,
and diving and glimpses of a colorful array of tropical
marine life. And the island also is home to a fascinating
blend of cultural influences, with local indigenous traditions,
including gorgeous arts and crafts, complemented by a strong
dose of Portuguese brought by the island’s former colonizers,
and a deep faith in Catholicism. Most travelers base themselves
in Maumere, the island’s largest town, or in Labuanbajo,
a popular resort area. Both spots offer travelers a good
choice of accommodations and a delightful range of dining
choices, including fresh seafood from Flores waters.
