The
Baliem Valley, set in the central highlands of Irian Jaya,
is one of the most naturally and culturally stunning spots
in the world. First discovered by the West in the 1930s,
it is today home to hundreds of groups of indigenous people,
each practicing a unique and fascinating culture little
changed by the modern world. Visitors trekking through the
valley can visit traditional villages, witness local ceremonies
or elaborate ritual feasts, and marvel at the colorful costumes
and exquisite artworks of the people.
The
Baliem landscape is a gorgeous green series of sloping hills,
dotted with cultivated fields and traditional houses. Most
visitors choose to base themselves in the town of Wamena,
a friendly, comfortable town which offers a convenient base
from which to explore the surrounding countryside.
The
town’s hotels include three and four star properties with
modern facilities and excellent service, while its restaurants
offer a variety of Western and local dishes. Wamena also
offers travelers services such as banking, telecommunications
and medical care, which are difficult to find in the remote
interior of the valley.
