Irian
Jaya is, without a doubt, one of the most fascinating destinations
anywhere in the world. Its environmental contrasts are stunning:
from the snow covered glacier topped peaks of the Maoke
Mountains to the soft sand beaches of Biak Island, from
the cool green slopes of the valleys to the deep jungle
of the interior. But if its natural wealth is impressive,
its cultural richness is even more so. Irian Jaya is home
to a huge number of different indigenous groups, and several
hundred different local languages are spoken within the
province. Most of Irian Jaya’s people still live in isolated
villages, farming the land for simple sustenance, and following
the ancient animist beliefs of their ancestors. Most visitors
to Irian Jaya arrive in Jayapura, the province’s capital.
This is a comfortable, modern city with good hotels and
restaurants and a complete range of travelers’ services.
Near Jayapura are a number of mountain lakes, traditional
villages, and excellent beaches.
Biak
Island is another popular destination, especially for travelers
searching for fantastic water sports, including world class
diving. But perhaps the most fascinating Irian Jaya adventure
is a trek through the Baliem Valley, where visitors are
greeted by stunning natural scenery and a colorful tapestry
of cultures. Whatever your destination, it is certain that
Irian Jaya will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
