| Bintan Island Area
If Batam Island is the bold, brash face of Indonesian
development, Bintan Island is its gentler side. Here
modernity is balanced with tradition, producing a
harmonious blend of old and new to welcome travelers.
Tanjung Pinang is the island’s main town, a thriving
business metropolis that still retains much of its
charm, especially in the coastal sections where
old-fashioned houses built on stilts stretch out into
the clear blue sea. Pantai Trikora is the island’s
main beach, a palm-fringed stretch of surf buffeted by
gentle ocean breezes.
Several good three and four star
hotels are to be found in these areas. The specialty of
Bintan is, of course, fresh seafood, although travelers
will also want to check out the offerings of the
colorful, hectic traditional night market. Bintan is
also a good base from which to explore the neighboring
islands, including colorful Penyeget Island, which has
lovely beaches, a fascinating old palace, and a cultural
stage where traditional dances are performed.
