Kendari, the
capital of Southeast Sulawesi, is a tranquil town set on a
wide blue bay next to the ocean. It offers travelers basic
accommodations at a number of modest hotels, as well as
tasty local fare at its many small restaurants. The town
offers good travelers’ services, including banking and
communications. Within the city visitors can witness
authentic local dance performances or, if they’re lucky, a
cultural festival, and shop for regional handicrafts,
including ornate silver work, beautifully made baskets, and
hand woven cloth.
There are a
number of fascinating attractions in the region surrounding
Kendari. The Morame Waterfalls are perhaps the most
spectacular in Indonesia, tumbling down a hundred meters to
a clear pool below, which offers fantastic swimming. Hari
Island, just off the Kendari coast, boasts a gorgeous,
unspoiled coral reef, perfect for snorkeling and diving, and
a variety of water sports, including boating and swimming.
