West Sumatra is
home to one of the most glorious displays of nature and
culture to be found anywhere in Indonesia. Its environmental
contrasts are striking: from the tangled trees of the virgin
rainforest to the rushing roar of waterfalls tumbling down
its steep peaks, from fields planted with rice, coconuts and
coffee to spectacular mountain lakes sparkling in the
tropical sun.
Culturally, West
Sumatra has also long fascinated travelers and scholars
alike. It is home to the Minangkabau ethnic group, one of
the last surviving matriarchal peoples in the world, who mix
their ancient cultural heritage with Islam. The Minangkabau
are renowned for their independent women, their gorgeous
crafts, and their fiery cuisine. West Sumatra’s capital,
Padang, is the center of commerce, linked to the rest of the
country by air.
Bukittinggi is
where most travelers chose to visit, relaxing in the cool
hills and enjoying local cultural spectacles. High in the
hills are a number of attractive lakes, where travelers can
enjoy water sports and witness unspoiled nature.
