Sumatra | Berastagi Area
Ever since Dutch colonial
times, Berastagi has been popular as a cool, hillside retreat
for those looking to beat the heat of the lowlands. Today the
town still preserves its antique atmosphere, offering visitors
fine examples of traditional architecture and a famous local market
overflowing with exquisite tropical fruits and vegetables, with
passionfruit a specialty.
While the main attraction
is relaxation, adventurous travellers can climb the slopes of
2,000 meter high Mount Sibayak for spectacular views across Sumatra’s
heartland. Golfers can play the 9-hole course built by a Dutch
oil company at the Hotel Bukit Kubu, and trekkers can explore
the culture and nature of the surrounding villages. Berastagi
boasts several four and three star hotels, complete with swimming
pools, fitness centers and tennis courts.
