North Sumatra is
a treasure trove of cultural and natural attractions. It is
home to almost a dozen different ethnic groups, each with
their own language and customs, and an incredible
environmental diversity, ranging from virgin rainforest to
lush green rice paddies, from palm-fringed beaches to
spectacular mountain lakes.
North Sumatra is
also one of Indonesia’s most economically vital provinces,
producing more than 30% of the country’s exports,
including palm oil, rubber, tobacco, and tea. The capital of
the province, Medan, is a cosmopolitan business hub buzzing
with colorful urban life. Lake Toba, the largest lake in
Southeast Asia and the deepest in the world, draws a steady
stream of visitors seeking to enjoy water sports and to
catch a glimpse of the area’s ancient Batak culture.
Berastagi,
halfway between Medan and Lake Toba, is also a popular spot,
with its cool green hills, traditional culture, and famed
local markets. Nias Island, off the west coast, has recently
become a favorite of travelers fascinated by its primitive
culture and its world renowned surfing beaches.
