Sumatra | Lake Toba Area
Lake Toba, the largest
lake in all of Southeast Asia, is the most famous of Sumatra’s
sights, and certainly one of its most spectacular. Formed by a
huge volcanic explosion, its deep waters provide the perfect spot
for swimming, water skiing and boating. The area is also home
to the Toba Batak ethnic group, who despite their conversion to
Christianity still hold onto many of their indigenous animist
practices.
The town of Parapat,
located on the lake shore, is the most popular resort spot, with
its cool, dry climate, stunning views, and wealth of activities.
It has an international class hotel, and a wide range of restaurants
serving Western fare, Chinese food, and spicy Sumatran cuisine.
Many travelers also make the quick ferry trip to Samosir Island,
located in the middle of the lake. The villages of Tuk-Tuk, Tomok
and Ambarita are dotted with basic lodgings. Samosir is a wonderful
place to relax, shop for local crafts, and explore authentic Batak
culture, including visiting a number of ancient stone tombs carved
in fascinating traditional style.
